our guiding principles

Unsilence Together
At Unsilence, we believe that when we share hidden stories—stories of pain, of loss, of shame, of stigmas we've been too afraid to speak out loud—then we give permission for others to share hidden stories, too.
Deep Empathy
Through Unsilence learning experiences, young people develop empathy for ‘the Other.’ Unfamiliarity and perceptions of difference can drive prejudice; finding common-ground is its antidote—a pathway to healing and real social change.
Remembering the Forgotten
Many communities, their histories, and experiences are often forgotten or suppressed. Unsilence gives voice to these hidden and marginalized narratives—to truly be heard is to have one's story told.
Story-Driven
Unsilence experiences immerse learners in absorbing stories where urgent questions act as entry points to the realities of injustice. Fiction and nonfiction sources, the arts, and original serious games help learners make connections between historical and contemporary events.
Learner-Centered
Highly interactive Unsilence experiences allow learners to direct their own learning experiences, discover authentic personal connections, and formulate urgent questions aimed at finding solutions to ongoing injustice.
Research-Based Innovation
Innovative Unsilence programming draws from learning, design, and game theory to engage learners deeply in new and transformational ways. Unsilence helps young people confront the fear of shame, trauma, and not being believed by exploring the institutional, cultural, and personal barriers to unsilencing.
