UNSILENCE Submission Terms and Conditions
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: The following terms and conditions (“these Terms”), together with our Privacy Policy, apply to your submission of stories and associated materials to Unsilence, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located at 641 West Lake Street, Suite 200, Chicago, IL 60661 (www.unsilence.org) (“UNSILENCE” or “we”). If you do not agree with anything stated in these Terms or in our Privacy Policy, you should not submit anything to UNSILENCE.
About
UNSILENCE is collecting human rights stories from people (18+) willing to share their personal experiences – specifically:
◆ stories from victims and survivors of different forms of violence, including emotional and psychological violence, and/or human rights atrocities;
◆ stories from perpetrators of violence with a specific focus on justice and reconciliation; and
◆ stories from witnesses of human rights violations, including onlookers and helpers.
Based on the stories collected, UNSILENCE will develop and publish highly engaging (and, where possible, interactive) public educational content features on the UNSILENCE website, with the objective of connecting a broad range of marginalized human rights narratives from different perspectives.
Who Can Submit
Individuals who are at least 18 years of age at the time of submission, regardless of their nationality or country of residence.
When to Submit
November 10, 2017 through December 31, 2020. UNSILENCE may extend the submission window at its discretion.
How to Submit
Online submission only, at www.unsilence.org/story. Please use the submission form provided on the site and follow the instructions to complete the form. IMPORTANT: Your submission must adhere to the following guidelines:
◆ Your submission must be based on your own personal experience.
◆ Your submission must not contain any statement that you know is untrue, false or fabricated or misrepresents your experience (including material exaggeration).
◆ Your submission must be your own independent creation. Please do not submit any third-party material, unless you can provide proof that you have obtained the third-party owner’s consent to use the material in your submission.
◆ Your submission must not include any material that is obscene, pornographic, vulgar, profane, defamatory or libelous.
Protection of Identity
If you wish, you may choose not to reveal the identity of the people depicted or referenced in your story. If you choose to reveal the identify of the people depicted or referenced in your story, and if your story is used by UNSILENCE, UNSILENCE nonetheless will make reasonable efforts to not reveal the identity of the people depicted or referenced in your story.
Grant of Consent
By making a submission to UNSILENCE, you expressly give consent and permission to UNSILENCE to use your story and any associated material submitted by you, for UNSILENCE’s public educational uses (as described in the “About” section above) in perpetuity and throughout the world, with the following understandings:
◆ your submission is completely voluntary and consensual and is made without any condition of compensation (whether monetary or otherwise) or attribution;
◆ UNSILENCE makes no representation or promise that your story will be used in any way;
◆ UNSILENCE will have complete discretion and freedom to decide whether or not to use your story and how to use your story;
◆ if your story is used, UNSILENCE will be free to use it in any way UNSILENCE deems appropriate, including combining your story with stories collected from other people, fictionalize and dramatizing your story, etc.; and
◆ UNSILENCE will not mention anyone by name when using a story (except in situations where we wish to feature a particular story and have received specific written permissions from the story’s submitter and others involved in the story to reveal their names in connection with the story).
Release of Liability
By making a submission to UNSILENCE, you waive the right to assert against UNSILENCE and its successors and assigns, and you forever release UNSILENCE and its successors and assigns from, any and all claims and damages based upon or arising out of UNSILENCE’s use of your submission in accordance with in these Terms, including, without limitation, claims and damages for defamation or libel, violation of copyright, or violation of any right to privacy or publicity.
Privacy
Names and contact information collected from submitters will only be used internally by UNSILENCE (including for reaching out to submitters regarding their stories) and will not be used for any other purpose by UNSILENCE, nor will be shared with third parties. Miscellaneous
These Terms are governed by and shall be construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Illinois, U.S.A. (without giving effect to the conflicts of law provisions thereof). You and UNSILENCE both hereby submit to the exclusive venue and jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in the State of Illinois, U.S.A. for any legal action arising out of these Terms or any submission you make to UNSILENCE.
